How to make a million dollar idea

(workshop)

Alia Pathan invites you to discuss the idea of
art as work or labour to consider how we apply
these definitions to our own making. Can we negotiate a value for an artwork based on how it was made and who the artist is? The workshop will consider authorship, intellectual property and immaterial labour as legitimate artistic production, and discuss the value we
attach to this kind of working method.

Reading of TIN

Garry Morris, Metal and Ariya invite you to a rehearsed reading of TIN.

About The Play

Best friends Jacqueline and Pauline have come from Yorkshire to an old tin mining town in Cornwall to honour a promise: to scatter the ashes of Pauline's great granddad Thomas. But, Jacqueline has come to say goodbye for another reason. Their stories unfold at the water's edge.

TIN celebrates the lives of two working class women, the challenges of growing old disgracefully and the agony of learning to let go of the ones you love. Their journey becomes a quest to find a place where the conscience can rest in peace.

This reading of TIN has been financially supported by Arts Council England. Special thanks to Ian Brownbill, and Jenny Porter of Metal Culture for rehearsal, workshop and development space. Visit www.metalculture.com. 0151 707 2277.

My Granddad’s Car - Part 1

An Exchange Event

Sayed Hasan and Karl Obulo want to bring their granddad's cars from Pakistan and Nigeria to the U.K. and park them side by side. Placing two objects with different historical narratives together represents a shared interest in resolving the distances between their cultural and ancestral inheritances. In empathising with each other's desire to see and touch their granddad's cars in their country of birth, they reflect upon the hybridized character of identity and relationships in a globalized world. As emerging artists, Sayed and Karl discuss the on-going challenges involved in realising their idea in this first of a two part presentation.

Power. Who has it, who wants it, who tries to take it from you? The poets know. What Are They Whispering? is a poetry show to nudge you or urge you to weigh up the balance of power in your own life. The dynamic trio of poets whose work will charge you up is Imtiaz Dharker, Joe Dunthorne and John Stammers. They perform their poems about power in both its rawest and most subtle states. Annual Open 2011

Nottingham Castle Annual Open 2011

in association with New Art Exchange

This year the Open has drawn applicants from across the region with almost 1000 art works submitted by just over 300 artists and makers. The selection panel, which consisted of three prestigious judges Sheila McGregor (Chief Executive, Axis), Lina Peterson (Jeweller) and Dan Perfect (Artist), short listed 129 works by 65 artists (38 from Nottingham). The selected work reflects a wide variety of media including video, performance, collage, drawing, ceramics, painting, jewellery, installation, sculpture and printmaking.

At the end of the selection the panel picked five 'finalists'. All 65 exhibiting artists were then invited to vote for one of the five, to determine the overall winner of the top cash prize. All prizes for the Annual Open have generously been provided by the exhibition's sponsors and have proved to be a great draw for artists, along with the unique experience of showing in the historic setting of Nottingham Castle. For the fourth year running the Annual Open has been supported by the New Art Exchange, who contribute to the prize fund and offer a winning artist a solo exhibition in their galleries.

The much-loved Annual Open exhibition has been a regular feature at the Castle since 1878, and continues to be as popular as ever. The Open develops year on year and is a valuable vehicle for the region's emerging artists, as well as those with an established practice.

Saturday 8 October - Sunday 6 November

The Castle is open Tuesday - Sunday, 10am - 4pm (last admission is 3.30pm)

Entry to Nottingham Castle Museum & Art Gallery is £5.50 (adults) £4 (concessions) and city residents with a valid Citycard can gain entry Tuesday - Friday for just £1.

World Event Young Artists

World Event Young Artists seeks 1,000 young artists for a new cultural festival.

In September 2012, the first World Event Young Artists (WEYA) launches in Nottingham. A finale to the Cultural Olympiad, WEYA - the first event of its kind - will bring together 1,000 young artists from 120 nations for a ten-day cultural festival across the city. WEYA now seeks applications from UK-based artists of every discipline who have exciting new work to share and who are open to the possibilities of intercultural dialogue that the festival will afford.

Applications are invited across all art forms - from music, dance, theatre and spoken word to film, visual art and gastronomy - and from artists aged between 18 and 30. Successful applicants will go on to represent the UK in the festival, and will join artists from countries ranging from Italy, Kenya and Mexico to Canada, India and China. WEYA takes place from 7 to 16 September 2012 and will be held across Nottingham's world class arts venues and in alternative spaces all over the city.

World Event Young Artists is hosted by UK Young Artists. As well as giving artists a high-profile international platform to show their work, WEYA will provide them with opportunities to see work from all over the world, collaborate with other like-minded individuals, network and take part in talks and debates.  Successful artists will be chosen by an expert selection panel comprising curators and programmers from a range of UK arts venues.

The closing date for entries is 31 October 2011, with selected artists informed of their success in February 2012.  Call for entries for other countries will be announced in different waves throughout the summer.

Carnival of Monsters

Festival of Contemporary Arts 2011

15th October to 29th October

Carnival of Monsters is a rare opportunity for professional artists living and working in the East Midlands to showcase ambitious works of art in a large and diverse industrial setting outside the City Centre. This venue is being made available to artists to show work in any media desired, to respond to the spaces which are very large and include a warehouse space, shop front, areas without natural light, disused offices etc. There is no theme apart from the suggestion that works should ideally respond to the architecture as the scale of the venue. The event is being made possible by a desire on the part of the site owners Bartons to develop an exhibitions and events venue and may be repeated if successful. Also, the event is aimed at professional artists as there are few opportunities of this nature in the region.

Pretty Dyana

A Gypsy Recycling Saga

A Documentary by Boris Mitić

An intimate look at Gypsy refugees in a Belgrade suburb who make a living by transforming Citroën’s classic 2cv and Dyana cars into Mad Max-like recycling vehicles, with which they collect cardboard, bottles and scrap metal. These modern horses are much more efficient than the cart-pushing competition, but even more important -- they also mean freedom, hope and style for their crafty owners. Even the car batteries are used as power generators in order to get some light, watch TV and recharge mobiles! Almost an alchemist’s dream come true! But the police doesn’t always find these strange vehicles funny…

Port of Memory (2006)

Dir. Kamal Aljafari (63 mins)

Port of Memory is a story rarely told, about the emptying of Jaffa, a thriving urban and economic port city in pre-1948 Palestine, of its indigenous residents. Aljafari’s films follow his family after they receive an order to evacuate their home in Ajami, Jaffa’s once wealthy sea-front neighborhood. Radically poetic, Port of Memory is a reflection on the absurdity of being at once present and absent.

Hetain Patel's TEN

at The Alchemy Festival, Southbank Centre, Purcell Room

Dance4 presents three men's journey of discovery somewhere between Barbados, Scotland and India. Taking music and the Indian ten-beat rhythm cycle as a starting point, this performance by Hetain Patel, Mark Evans and Dave 'Stickman' Higgins delves with endearing honesty and humour into the usually dry questions of cultural identity.

TEN looks at the meeting place between the red dot on the Hindu forehead and the red cross on the English flag, negotiating multiple and overlapping identities in Britain today.

Award-winning artist Hetain Patel has created a diverse body of work including video shown at Alchemy festival in 2010, photography and installations. TEN is his eagerly awaited first piece for theatre. Written by Hetain Patel

Screening of In The Further Soil

We are featuring a sampad dance video of a live dance theatre show - In the further soil, performed at Mumbai's Amphitheatre (NAE Foyer Screen)

A dance and music theatre production inspired by the text from Rabindranath Tagore. The Bengali poet and philosopher once said, when commenting on the Indian diaspora:

“To study a banyan tree, you not only must know its main stem in its own soil, but also must trace the growth of its greatness in the further soil, for then you can know the true nature of its vitality.”

In the Further Soil tells the story of the urban landscapes of India and the UK. Human stories that bring out fast-changing globalised identities of young people told emotionally through the interplay of music, dance and spoken word. Atmospheric jazz and Afro-beats mix with Bengali baul songs; rhythms fire up Bharatanatyam dance with urban moves and spoken word – bringing together the old and new.

Directed by Harmage Singh Kalirai, starring Soweto Kinch. Credits include; Layla Mujnun, Heer Ranjha, and Chicken Tikka Masala – nominated for the Raindance Award. International cast includes Shelley King, Soweto Kinch, Anusha Subramanyam, Ratul Shankar Ghosh, Dibyendu Mukherjee and Sanjukta Ray.

Produced by sampad in partnership with Teamwork Productions.

Street Magic and Hill Stations of India

Film screening - Double bill

A double bill of documentary films shot in India. In their "Magic and Mystery Tour" Superstar American magicians Penn and Teller went in search of the Jadugars of India - street magicians who perform in much the same way they have for centuries. Their attempts to show control over a chaotic world - even over life and death- result in some of the most technically beautiful and seriously bloody illusions in the world. Shot ten years later, the award-winning 'Indian Hill Railways: Nilgiri Mountain Railway' shows how the World's Biggest Employer, Indian Railways, attempts to master the vagaries of weather and ancient rolling stock on a daily basis to keep the railways running. A beautiful and evocative portrait of a Hill Railway and Station "Snooty" Ooty, it serves, the film is about devotion to duty and the upkeep of a tradition as important to India, if not as ancient, as the traditions the magicians try to keep.

Both films explore the relationship between Colonial India and modern India.

Thursday 17 March, 7pm

Director Hugo Smith who has worked extensively in India since the early 1990s will be available for Q&A about the films after the screening.

Admission: £3 (£2 concessions)

Circle of Sound - Soumik Datta

Music Performance

Soumik Datta is one of the most acclaimed Sarod players in the world today. His playing takes you on an exploration of time: from slow grandeur to fast, ecstatic rhythms. Having collaborated with Beyonce, Talvin Singh, Akram Khan and Bill Bailey, Soumik is 'a must for those who find Indian music intimidating' (Songlines Magazine).

Circle of Sound is an audio / visual show featuring avant garde electric Sarod and Drums in a revolutionary concert experience, featuring British Sarod maestro Soumik Datta and pioneering drummer Bernhard Schimpelsberger aka Taalis. “Your mind wanders when you improvise. You see things, visit places, revisit a memory: a girl on a cycle, the creak of a floorboard, the shape of a temple dome, windows like orange square eyes on the face of a skyscraper, the skyline of a city, the bend of a dancer, the calm breath of traffic, the regularity of escalators, the faces in a crowd. These when combined make up your circle - your circle of sound.”

An Evening with Aakash Odedra

Dance Performance

in association with Nottdance Festival 2011

In this special performance, rising Kathak star Aakash Odedra will perform three special dance pieces, as well as screen a special film collaboration with John Marc Gowans (courtesy: Akademi). Aakash and John Marc come together to capture Aakash's unique blend of Kathak through a video lens. They manipulate rhythmic time cycles to give a larger than life representation of Indian classical dance in a contemporary context. [Running time: approximately 20 minutes]

Barse Baderia - choreographed by Kumudini Lakhia

Based on Meerabai's famous poetry, this piece describes the joy of the arrival of the Monsoons as a simile to the arrival of Lord Krishna. Meera's dedication to her Lord came to symbolize ‘devotion’; transforming her grief into a passionate spiritual devotion that inspired her countless songs, drenched with eroticism and separation.

Dhamaar - choreographed by Kumudini Lakhia

The dhamaar takes its name from the taal (rhythm) of 14 beats and is usually performed in a mood of obeisance. The performer paints abstract dance with an emotional quality by syncopating body movements with musicality, bringing to life the joy and energy of the Pakhwaj based taal and complexities of rhythm.

Mohe Apne Hi Rang Mena - choreographed by Aakash Odedra
Sufi Kathak is a unique dance form fused with unique idioms and synchronised with Sufi music (the mystical dimension of Islam). It expatiates the audience by rekindling this ancient form of dance and traditional music. Popularly referred to as the 'Dance of Ecstasy'; it is a somewhat sensual performance that combines 600 year old poetic compositions with classical Indian dance. When the human dancer enacts this, he or she completely surrenders to God, as Sufism is a way to reach ‘the Almighty’.

In association with Nottingham Asian Arts Council, Akademi and Nottdance Festival 2011.

India’s Forgotten Women

Film screening

Director: Michael Lawson

This searing documentary looks at exploitation and oppression in the world’s largest democracy. Filmed in the towns and villages in and around Hyderabad, Bengalaru, Belgaum and Mumbai, it portrays comprehensive claims of caste oppression, and in some cases outright persecution. After sixty years of Independence and India’s enormous economic growth, surprisingly little has changed for women on the lowest rung of the caste ladder. In a society where freedom, democracy and wealth are so highly prized, why is it that Dalit women are still so shockingly abused, exploited and oppressed?

Thursday 10 February, 7pm

Followed by a Q&A session with speakers: Ananya Jahanara Kabir (University of Leeds), Anjali Guptara (Presenter of India’s Forgotten Women) and Carol Jones (Nottingham Trent University) and Chaired by Dr Lisa Mooney Smith (Board Member, NAE)
