The Clock(24 hour screening)
Come and join us for this free and extraordinary 24 hour event at New Art Exchange. This is a one off event at which you will be able to enjoy Christian Marclay’s work "The Clock" in its entirety as well as special interventions, music and experiences unfolding throughout Friday night and into Saturday morning.
Marclay's latest masterpiece is a montage of clips from several thousand films, structured so that the resulting artwork always conveys the correct time, minute by minute, in the time zone in which is it being exhibited. The scenes in which we see clocks or hear chimes tend to be either transitional ones suggesting the passage of time or suspenseful ones building up to dramatic action. Slam tells the story of Ray Joshua, an original, gifted young MC trapped in a war-zone housing project known as Dodge City. Unable to find a job, Ray copes with the despair and poverty of his neighbourhood by using his wits and verbal talent. While participating in a drug deal gone bad, Ray is caught by the police and sent to prison. When his lawyer explains the judicial system & his 'options' (or lack thereof) Ray despairs, particularly as he is being pressured to participate in a drug culture he has strived to get away from. But Ray's recent experiences have precipitated an awakening of sorts, and he sees the truth behind the game... Unwilling to believe that his options are limited to the choices he's being presented with, he makes the radical choice to retaliate with words, and speak the truths that he's witnessed. The Milk of Sorrow(La Teta Asustada)Film Screening (12)Dir: Claudia Llosa (Spain / Peru 2008)
Fausta is ill with a disease contracted from her mother’s breast milk known as “the milk of sorrow”. However, this is not a sickness caused by bacteria or infection: it is a condition that only affects those women in Peru who were abused or raped during the years of terrorist struggle. Although this horrific period is now history, Fausta is nonetheless a living reminder of this time. Her sickness is called fear - and it has robbed her of her soul. But then, when her mother suddenly dies, Fausta is forced to face her fears. (Dogwoof Films).
Sandra L Tabares-Duque will be introducing The Milk of Sorrow. Sandra is a Film Programmer specialised in Latin American cinema. She previously worked as the Artistic Director of the DLA (Discovering Latin America) Film Festival and is currently the Film Programmer of Colombiage. She has also carried out an academic research documentary focusing on the cultural representation and perception of Latin American films by Latin American and non-Latin American audiences in London and is currently directing a documentary project in Colombia. New Art Exchange, John Moores University, Nottingham Trent University in association with The Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool present In Conversation with Sonia Khurana@ Liverpool John Moores UniversityAs part of Liverpool Biennial
Khurana’s art practice embraces areas in-between video, photography, elements of performance, drawing, installation, and more recently, works in public spaces. Her recent body of work - mainly videos, performances and text - focuses on the poetics of inner experience, and the polemics of being in the world. Khurana tends to draw critically on these concerns in ways that are often visually simple and understated. Join us for this special talk with Dr Catherine Butterworth.
Through performative modes, she strives to engage with the constant struggle between body and language, to achieve a corporeal eloquence. Through these deliberately poetic intimations, Khurana strive to persistently explore and re-define the space of the political. Sonia Khurana has exhibited and worked widely and internationally, including recently at Aichee Trienniale (Ngoya, Japan), Centre Pompidou (Paris, France) and the Whitechapel Gallery as part of ‘Where three dreams cross’, and the travelling exhibition ‘Indian Highway’. In May 2010 she was a panel speaker for ‘Art Institutions and Feminist Politics Now’ symposium at MOMA , New York. New Art Exchange and Nottingham Trent University in association with The Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool present “Lying-down-on-the-ground”A performance event devised and directed by artist Sonia Khurana @ Lime Street train station, Liverpool As part of Liverpool Biennial
Staged on the ‘sidelines’ of the larger art event, Khurana proposes to insert a provocation, by playfully inviting passers by to lie down on the ground. The bodies lying thus are continually documented, described or circumscribed. “Beginning literally, with affecting a change in the participant’s visual perspective, this simple act of lying down soon begins to resonate with multiple layers of oblique suggestions that are to do with dismantling the norms of protected life, ranging from resistance, friction, contamination, dispossession, to the absurd and the allegorical. Autographical traces drawn on the ground transform a singular act into a collective utterance.”
Opening Weekend: For the Liverpool Biennial, Sonia will work with students / volunteers to invite a mutual exchange of the experience of lying down in both, art or non-art contexts. Here “lying down..” is conceptualised to begin a performance event that engages passers by in a busy public space in the city of Liverpool, such as the Lime Street train station (other venues TBA) during the opening weekend of the biennial. Displacement and Memories - Jasim GhafurProject Launch
Refugee experiences are a small fraction of the cruelty and injustice within the current socio economical system. However this injustice has been justified and injected into the social unconsciousness and created reactions that add to the pre-enforced ideological domination.
Jasim Ghafur is our Artist in Residence from 9th August to 17th September. The overlapped visualised characteristics of these hurts and unjust are reflected in his art practice, which we will be launching on 25th August. Through it he investigates the engraved effects of the issue of displacement and exile on his memory and the memory of any individual refugee and asylum seekers. The project will also be looking at the historical roots of the current experiences and reveals its mystical dimension in order to re-exhibit its influence throughout generations.

In Conversation with Sonia Khurana(Visual Artist, India) and David Schischka Thomas (Senior Curator, NAE)Khurana’s art practice embraces areas in-between video, photography, elements of performance, drawing, installation, and more recently, works in public spaces. Her recent body of work - mainly videos, performances and text - focuses on the poetics of inner experience, and the polemics of being in the world. Khurana tends to draw critically on these concerns in ways that are often visually simple and understated.
Through performative modes, she strives to engage with the constant struggle between body and language, to achieve a corporeal eloquence. Through these deliberately poetic intimations, Khurana strive to persistently explore and re-define the space of the political.
Sonia Khurana has exhibited widely and internationally, including recently at Centre Pompidou, Paris, the Whitechapel Gallery as part of ‘Where three dreams cross’, and the travelling exhibition ‘Indian Highway’. In May 2010 she was a panel speaker for ‘Art Institutions and Feminist Politics Now’ symposium at MOMA , New York.

Far From GoneDir: Barney Broomfield (40mins) On The Run With AbdulDir: David Lale (24 mins) Film Screening - Double BillBest friends, Stephen and Boniface, are two Congolese refugees who have escaped their war-ravaged country with their lives, barely. Escaping to Meheba Refugee Settlement, Zambia, the two must face new challenges, not least of which is trying not to fall in love. Life in the camp is supposed to make life better for refugees and to deliver self-determination. The reality is far from inspiring, as their lives splinter and converge and Stephen is offered a chance to resettle in Europe, while Boniface must watch as the departure draws near. A riveting and uniquely humanist angle on conflict that has been all but forgotten.
Abdul is a symbol for Europe’s secret. He is a young refugee who is stuck in Calais with dozens of others trying to catch a boat to England. Broke and with home too far behind him Abdul is stuck in limbo on the coast of France, living from day to day without any rights, while Europe pleads ignorance to hundreds others like him...

The MahabharataScreenings
The Mahabharata is a vast epic of glorious heights and enormous depth that tells the story of a Great War between the five Pandava Princes and their cousins, the Kauravas; all descendents of the great King Bharat - the first King of India. It tells of friendships broken by greed and jealousy, of pledges honoured and promises shattered, the overthrow of kingdoms and mighty wars that gave rise to the glories of India. But through the story is conveyed a timeless message of peace; its essence contained in the telling of Lord Krishna's message to humanity - the Bhagavad Gita.
Presented throughout the public spaces of New Art Exchange | Admission: Free Please note due to technical difficulties The Mahabharata will now be screening week commencing 24 May. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
